MARLO HUNTER (Director-Choreographer)

MARLO HUNTER is a director & choreographer based in New York, and the winner of the 2013 Callaway Award for Excellence in Choreography for her work on Carner & Gregor’s UNLOCK’D which she directed & choreographed at The Duke on 42nd Street for Prospect Theater Company.

Marlo directed & choreographed the critically-praised World Premiere of Adam Overett’s MY LIFE IS A MUSICAL at Bay Street Theatre, after directing a developmental lab production at The Duke.  Recent:  Choreographer, LMNOP, at TUTS Underground (Joe Calaro, director); Choreographer, the Second Stage revival of Terrence McNally’s LIPS TOGETHER, TEETH APART; Director & Choreographer, DATE OF A LIFETIME at New Jersey Rep; Director, Carner & Gregor’s ISLAND SONG at the Bloomington Playwrights Project; Associate Choreographer on Roundabout Theatre’s revival of PICNIC (Chase Brock, choreographer).  Marlo founded Eating Their Words through which prominent playwrights and seasoned chefs collaborate for an unprecedented immersive experience, resulting in world-premiere plays coupled with the menu they inspired.  Through ETW Marlo has commissioned & directed new plays by Neil LaBute, Beau Willimon, Douglas Carter Beane, Sarah Treem, Theresa Rebeck, David Grimm, Annie Baker, Brooke Berman, Amy Herzog, Keith Reddin, Jonathan Marc Sherman, Sam Forman, Rob Ackerman, and Steven LevensonUpcoming: Inspired by ETW, Marlo and co-conceiver, Creative Producer Sasha Eden, are developing an immersive culinary theatrical production, bringing celebrated chef Carla Hall (Top Chef, The Chew) into collaboration with four playwrights for the creation of a theatrical experience that stimulates all the senses.

As a prolific developer of new plays & musicals from their most nascent stages, Marlo is currently collaborating on new projects by Carner & Gregor (ISLAND SONG), Doug Cohen & Zoe Samuels (HELEN OF TROY), Timothy Huang (COSTS OF LIVING), Julianne Wick Davis (Untitled Willard Suitcases Musical), Kevin Hammonds & Kristin Bair (SUPER HERO), Andrea Daly & Jeff Bienstock (LEGENDALE), and Frank Winters (Untitled Nellie Bly Play).

Marlo teaches a workshop, “The Freelance Artist’s Manifesto Boot Camp” in NYC, at universities, and through private coaching, empowering creative freelancers with mental and practical tools to survive and thrive as an artist.  She holds a B.A. in English/Dramatic Literature from Princeton University. She is a proud member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.
